Binary Star Measurements with the Star re

Four binaries, 10 UMa, UMa, 81 Cnc, and UMa, were observed with adaptive optics on the 3.5m telescope at the Starrre Optical Range on March 24, 1998, in order to investigate the relative photometry produced by adaptive optics within the isoplanatic patch. Iterative Blind Deconvolution (IBD) and Parametric Blind Deconvolution (PBD) techniques were used to post-process the data, and produced consistent results for position angles, separations, and relative magnitudes. The secondary of 81 Cnc (separation = 0:12 00) appears to be 0.12 mag brighter than the primary at 0:85, and therefore cooler. A new orbit derived for UMa (P = 35:6 yr; a = 0:184 00) is half the period and two thirds the size of that previously reported. Its components were separated at 0:067 00 by IBD, but not by PBD. A new orbit is also derived for UMa (P = 79:2 yr; a = 0:287 00). Simulations veriied the agreement produced between IBD and PBD, and overall, adaptive optics appears to be well suited for providing not only position angles and separations for close binaries, but good relative magnitudes, without quadrant ambiguity, as well.
